About the Shan people
The Shan people, also known as the Tai Long or Tai Yai, are a Tai ethnic group of Southeast Asia. They are the biggest minority of Burma (Myanmar) and primarily live in Shan State of this country, but also in other parts of Southeast Asia including Northern Thailand.
Shan culture is based on a mix of Theravada Buddhism & Satsana Phi or Ban Phi - a form of animistic belief.
Worship of ancestors is very important, but also other types of spirits of seemingly supernatural forces. Such deities often interact with the world of the living, at times protecting people, and at other times seeming to cause harm.
Guardian deities of places, such as the phi wat (ຜີວັດ, ผีวัด) of temples and the lak mueang (ຫລັກເມືອງ, หลักเมือง) of towns are celebrated with communal gatherings and offerings of food.
